Tour #One!
Hello! My name is Theo, and I'm sort of in charge of conducting these special tours around Cherry Run which we hope will provide more information and answer any questions you may have about the camp. Actually, I'm sort of moonlighting here -- I have another job, but I'm not permitted to tell you where that is. Oh, it's legal, so don't jump to conclusions -- it's just that my past history has some rather sad and tragic moments which I won't detail here. If you are curious, you will have to get in touch with that Harriger fellow and he will fill you in about me, what my full name is, etc.
And now, on with the tour! There is always lots of activity going on at Cherry Run throughout the year, as well as at the regular encampment. Repairs, maintenance, improvements, and additions are a non-stop operation carried out by dedicated supporters of Cherry Run Camp Meeting. Not only do people give generously of their finances, but they contribute of their abilities and time in work sessions to improve the camp facility. For instance take a look at a project that got underway during the recent 2000 session of the encampment. The storage shed and garage needed to be extended and here you see persons at work -- volunteers who gave time, ability, and work to get this project well on the way to completion.
Here is the bookstore on the end on your left and as you walk beyond the bookstore the rest of the building consists of dormitories for the boys -- always interesting to hear the announcements as to which dorm was "best" and which was "worst!" "Best Dorm" people get to go to the head of the line at meal time and "Worst Dorm" people? Well, take a guess what happens to them! Seems like there are few repeats of "Worst Dorm" awards!
Ah, the Richey cabin, which has an interesting history. Back a few years ago the Richey's and the Harriger's bought a rather elderly cottage, with the main feature being that a lot of bats chose to stay in it, which distressed Mrs. Richey and Mrs. Harriger. Not wanting to kill the bats, the men folk caught them and released them. That evening, for some strange reason, there were an unusal number of bats flying around in the tabernacle during the service --- hmmmm -- where could they have come from? What you see is the replacement of the antique structure, which is reported to be bat-free!
Here you are looking north along "cottage row" on the east side of the camp. Along the right side is a building that contains a laundry area which is available for use by those staying at the camp while it is in session. The lady in the picture is one who survived what had been formerly and affectionately known as the "Bat Shack" as mentioned above!
Thanks for taking Tour #1 -- now be sure to check out the other tours as they become available, OK? We'll be looking for you, and if you want to look into bringing a group to Cherry Run, contact the gentleman whose name, address, and phone number is given below.
